Por vs Para in Spanish
Updated October 30, 2026
Use para for a goal: a destination, purpose, deadline, recipient or opinion. Use por for the cause or the path: a reason, duration, through or along, an exchange, means, per and on behalf of. WanderMundo, an AI language learning app, lets you practice both with an AI tutor that corrects every mistake as you speak.
What is the difference between por and para?
Both often translate as "for", which is why English speakers mix them up. The difference is direction. Para points forward like an arrow, to a target: where you are going, what something is for, who gets it, when it is due. Por looks at the road or the reason behind: why something happened, how long, which way, in exchange for what.
When you are not sure, ask yourself: am I talking about a goal (para) or a cause, route or exchange (por)?
