Days of the Week in Spanish
Updated November 1, 2026
The days of the week in Spanish are lunes, martes, miércoles, jueves, viernes, sábado and domingo. WanderMundo is an AI language learning app where you can use these Spanish words in a conversation with an AI tutor. This guide gives the meanings, simple sound guides, useful patterns and short practice tasks so you can move from recognizing a word to saying it in context.
What are the seven Spanish weekdays?
Read the names in order, then attach each one to something you actually do. A school timetable, work shift or appointment is a stronger memory cue than repeating a list without a purpose. Start with hoy es lunes, meaning today is Monday, and change only the last word. The complete list below gives a usable English sound guide alongside each spelling.
The sound guides are approximate, not phonetic transcription. Capital letters mark the stressed syllable. Spanish vowels stay short and steady: a as in father, e like a short eh, i like ee, o like a short oh, and u like oo. A written accent marks stress when needed. Listen to the whole word rather than giving each syllable English vowel glides. These guides use an s sound for c before e or i and for z, common throughout Latin America; much of Spain uses a th sound instead. Both are standard regional pronunciations.
| Spanish | English | Simple pronunciation | Pronunciation audio |
|---|---|---|---|
| lunes | Monday | LOO-nes | |
| martes | Tuesday | MAR-tes | |
| miércoles | Wednesday | MYEHR-koh-les | |
| jueves | Thursday | HWEH-ves | |
| viernes | Friday | VYEHR-nes | |
| sábado | Saturday | SAH-bah-doh | |
| domingo | Sunday | doh-MEEN-goh |
Are Spanish days capitalized, and are they masculine?
Spanish day names are lowercase unless they begin a sentence or form part of a proper name. Write el lunes, not el Lunes, in an ordinary sentence. All seven names are masculine, so their articles are el and los. The English habit of capitalizing Monday does not transfer to Spanish. An accent is not decoration: miércoles and sábado keep theirs in both headings and sentences.
Use el for one occurrence and los for a recurring day: Trabajo el lunes means I work on Monday, while Trabajo los lunes means I work on Mondays. English on usually disappears; you do not need en before the day in these expressions. A bare day after ser identifies it: Hoy es viernes. Compare that with a plan: La reunión es el viernes, the meeting is on Friday.
How do you say on Mondays or every Saturday?
Los lunes means on Mondays; los sábados means on Saturdays. Lunes, martes, miércoles, jueves and viernes already end in s and do not change for the plural. Sábado and domingo add s. The article tells you whether an unchanged name is singular or plural. Cada lunes, every Monday, is another useful way to express a routine.
Keep your first practice pair deliberately small: El martes estudio español, I study Spanish on Tuesday; Los martes estudio español, I study Spanish on Tuesdays. Then switch the activity to trabajo, work, or descanso, rest. You are practicing a sentence pattern, not seven unrelated labels. Do not say los sábadoses or add another s to lunes.
| Spanish | Meaning | Use |
|---|---|---|
| el lunes | on Monday | one Monday |
| los lunes | on Mondays | repeated Mondays |
| el sábado | on Saturday | one Saturday |
| los sábados | on Saturdays | repeated Saturdays |
Where do the Spanish day names come from?
Lunes is connected with the moon, martes with Mars, miércoles with Mercury, jueves with Jupiter and viernes with Venus. Sábado comes from the Sabbath, while domingo refers to the Lord’s day. These historical connections explain the names; they are memory hooks, not definitions of how people now spend those days. Martes and Mars are especially easy to connect visually.
Picture a moon for lunes and a red planet for martes, then use a real calendar so the imagery does not replace the sequence. If miércoles is the difficult one, separate it into miér-co-les and notice that the stress is near the beginning. For jueves, the j is a breathy sound rather than an English j. For viernes, start with one smooth vie syllable.
Does a Spanish calendar start on Monday?
Spanish calendars commonly show Monday first and Sunday last. That convention is useful when reading a timetable, but calendar settings and local formats can differ. Check the column labels instead of assuming every Spanish-language calendar uses the same layout. A booking confirmation may also use numbers rather than full day names.
The compact written abbreviations are lun., mar., mié., jue., vie., sáb. and dom. Keep the accent in mié. and sáb. A heading or digital calendar may use a shorter form without the period, so learn the full names first. Do not confuse mar. for martes with marzo when the context is a month. The surrounding date tells you which meaning is intended.
| Day | Abbreviation |
|---|---|
| lunes | lun. |
| martes | mar. |
| miércoles | mié. |
| jueves | jue. |
| viernes | vie. |
| sábado | sáb. |
| domingo | dom. |
Which phrases connect today, yesterday and tomorrow?
Hoy es means today is; ayer fue means yesterday was; mañana es means tomorrow is when identifying the day. El fin de semana is the weekend, and entre semana means during the week or on weekdays. Distinguish naming a day from describing an action. Ayer fue lunes identifies yesterday; Ayer fui al gimnasio says I went to the gym.
| Spanish | English | Simple pronunciation | Pronunciation audio |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hoy es lunes. | Today is Monday. | oy es LOO-nes | |
| Ayer fue domingo. | Yesterday was Sunday. | ah-YEHR fweh doh-MEEN-goh | |
| Mañana es martes. | Tomorrow is Tuesday. | mah-NYAH-nah es MAR-tes | |
| El lunes fui al gimnasio. | On Monday I went to the gym. | el LOO-nes fwee al heem-NAH-syoh | |
| El sábado cené con amigos. | On Saturday I had dinner with friends. | el SAH-bah-doh seh-NEH kon ah-MEE-gohs | |
| Trabajo entre semana. | I work during the week. | trah-BAH-hoh EN-treh seh-MAH-nah |
How can you remember the week without translating each day?
Use three time windows: what happened yesterday, what you do regularly, and what happens next. For the past, say El lunes fui al gimnasio. For a routine, say Los viernes descanso. For a plan, say El domingo voy a visitar a mi familia. Keep the article and day together as one small chunk. This makes the expression easier to retrieve than an isolated name.
Write your actual week in Spanish with one activity per line. Cover the English translations and read the schedule aloud. On the next day, return to it without looking first. If you confuse martes and miércoles, practice a short contrast rather than restarting the full list. Accuracy comes from noticing which pair you confuse and checking it in a sentence.
Mini quiz: can you use the Spanish days?
Choose an answer to each question, then check the explanation. This is a practice quiz about weekdays, not a CEFR placement test. For an extra speaking task, turn every correct answer into a sentence about your own week.
How can you practice weekdays with an AI tutor?
Start with the free Spanish course and the Spanish beginner guide if the sentence patterns are new. Ask your tutor to make a simple weekly plan with you. Give one activity and one day in each reply, then tell the tutor what you did yesterday. WanderMundo can show corrections and translations, and saved words can return in Review.
Before the conversation, choose three true facts about your schedule. During it, try answering without the English list. After it, revisit the one day you missed instead of saving everything indiscriminately. Connect your calendar practice with Spanish months and dates, Spanish numbers and everyday Spanish phrases. This turns a small vocabulary set into a booking, a birthday or a real plan.

Frequently asked questions
Is lunes singular or plural?
The word lunes has the same singular and plural form. El lunes refers to one Monday; los lunes refers to Mondays as a recurring pattern.
How do you say the weekend in Spanish?
The weekend is el fin de semana. Use el fin de semana for a particular weekend and los fines de semana for weekends generally.
Does miércoles need an accent?
Yes. The correct spelling is miércoles. Its abbreviation mié. also retains the accent.
Can I say en lunes for on Monday?
For an ordinary date or plan, use el lunes rather than en lunes: La clase es el lunes. With repeated Mondays, use los lunes.
Why is jueves pronounced with an h-like sound?
The Spanish j is not the English sound in job. It is a breathy or throaty sound depending on the speaker, so HWEH-ves is only an approximate English guide.
How do I ask what day it is?
Ask ¿Qué día es hoy? A natural answer is Hoy es martes. For a calendar date, ¿A qué fecha estamos? asks for the date rather than just the weekday.
