Numbers in Spanish
Updated November 1, 2026
Spanish numbers begin uno, dos, tres, cuatro, cinco, seis, siete, ocho, nueve and diez; 100 is cien. WanderMundo is an AI language learning app where you can use these Spanish words in a conversation with an AI tutor. This guide gives the meanings, simple sound guides, useful patterns and short practice tasks so you can move from recognizing a word to saying it in context.
What are Spanish numbers zero to twenty?
Learn zero to fifteen as individual forms, then notice how sixteen to nineteen contain diez in a joined spelling. Dieciséis needs an accent. A number is not useful only for counting: it can be an address, an age, a room or a quantity. Mix recognition with use by saying your own age and counting objects around you.

How are 21 to 29 written in Spanish?
Numbers 21 to 29 are single words: veintiuno, veintidós, veintitrés, veinticuatro, veinticinco, veintiséis, veintisiete, veintiocho and veintinueve. Do not split veintidós into veinte y dos in ordinary modern spelling. The accents in veintidós, veintitrés and veintiséis preserve the spoken stress. Veintiuno changes before a noun: veintiún libros or veintiuna páginas.

How do tens and y work from thirty onward?
From 31, combine a ten with y and a unit: treinta y uno, cuarenta y dos, noventa y nueve. Exact tens do not need y. Thirty is treinta, forty cuarenta, fifty cincuenta, sixty sesenta, seventy setenta, eighty ochenta and ninety noventa. Keep sesenta and setenta distinct; they differ by one middle consonant.

What is the complete Spanish 1–100 chart?
The chart lists every number, not only the multiples of ten. Use it as a reference, then test random numbers rather than always counting upward from one. Finding 47 or 83 directly is closer to hearing a price or telephone number. The pronunciation column is an approximation, so let the audio settle the actual vowel sounds.

When do you use cien and ciento?
Use cien for exactly 100 and before a noun when the quantity is exactly a hundred: cien personas. Use ciento when another number follows: ciento uno, ciento veinte or ciento noventa y nueve. Cien mil is one hundred thousand. Do not generalize ciento to every number beginning with 100; what follows determines the form.
Hundreds from 200 through 900 agree with a feminine noun: doscientas personas, quinientas entradas, novecientas páginas. Learn the irregular stems quinientos, setecientos and novecientos carefully. The standalone counting forms are masculine, but quantities follow the noun. Mil is invariable: mil personas and dos mil personas, not dos miles personas.
| Value | Spanish | Simple pronunciation | Pronunciation audio |
|---|---|---|---|
| 100 | cien | syen | |
| 101 | ciento uno | SYEN-toh OO-noh | |
| 200 | doscientos | dohs-SYEN-tohs | |
| 300 | trescientos | tres-SYEN-tohs | |
| 400 | cuatrocientos | kwah-troh-SYEN-tohs | |
| 500 | quinientos | kee-NYEN-tohs | |
| 600 | seiscientos | seys-SYEN-tohs | |
| 700 | setecientos | seh-teh-SYEN-tohs | |
| 800 | ochocientos | oh-choh-SYEN-tohs | |
| 900 | novecientos | noh-veh-SYEN-tohs | |
| 1,000 | mil | meel | |
| 2,000 | dos mil | dohs meel | |
| 1,000,000 | un millón | oon mee-YON |
Why does uno become un or una?
Uno becomes un before a masculine noun and una before a feminine noun: un libro, una mesa. The same adjustment appears in compound numbers: treinta y un libros, treinta y una mesas. Veintiún needs a written accent in veintiún libros. For age, the noun años is masculine: Tengo veintiún años, I am twenty-one years old.
A million followed directly by a noun takes de: un millón de personas. If more numerals intervene, the structure changes: un millón doscientas mil personas. Start with the simple million-plus-noun chunk before tackling long figures. For everyday conversation, accurate small quantities and the noun agreement often matter more than reading enormous totals.
How do you say prices, ages, phone numbers and years?
To ask a price, use ¿Cuánto cuesta? To state an age, use tener rather than ser: Tengo treinta años. Phone numbers are often given digit by digit or in local groups; ask the speaker to repeat a group if needed. A year such as 2026 is dos mil veintiséis, not an English-style twenty twenty-six translated word for word.
Many Spanish-speaking countries use a comma as a decimal separator, while other local or technical conventions use a point. Check the document context instead of assuming a universal format. Coma means comma and punto means point. This guide uses number words rather than currency amounts; for the app’s plans, see the pricing page.
| Spanish | English | Simple pronunciation | Pronunciation audio |

| Tengo treinta años. | I am thirty years old. | TEN-goh TREYN-tah AH-nyohs | |
| ¿Cuánto cuesta? | How much does it cost? | KWAN-toh KWES-tah | |

| Compré dos libros ayer. | I bought two books yesterday. | kom-PREH dohs LEE-brohs ah-YEHR |
Mini quiz: can you build Spanish numbers?
Answer five pattern questions, then say your age, a house number and a year. Cover the chart first. Return only to the row you missed, and check whether the problem was the spelling, the number value or the noun agreement.
How do you practice numbers in conversation?
Follow the Spanish course and beginner Spanish plan, then ask your AI tutor to practice quantities, ages or dates. WanderMundo offers corrections and translations rather than a pronunciation score. Say a complete sentence such as Ayer compré dos libros so counting becomes part of a past-tense answer.
Use months and dates, weekdays and shopping phrases as the next contexts. A useful practice session asks for a date, gives a quantity and confirms a number back to the tutor. You do not need to master every hundred before beginning a simple exchange.
Who it's for
- English-speaking beginners who want a clear reference and useful spoken examples.
- Learners returning to Spanish who want to check a spelling or everyday pattern.
Who it's not for
- People needing an official language certificate or a substitute for qualified professional advice.
- Learners looking for an exhaustive linguistic dictionary rather than beginner practice.
Frequently asked questions
How do you say zero in Spanish?
Zero is cero, approximately SEH-roh in Latin American pronunciation. In much of Spain the first consonant sounds like th.
Does sixteen have a written accent?
Yes: dieciséis. The accent marks the final stressed syllable. Veintiséis also has an accent.
Is forty spelled cuatroenta?
No. Forty is cuarenta. Compare cuatro, four, with cuarenta, forty, rather than inserting the entire word cuatro into the tens form.
How do you say two thousand?
Two thousand is dos mil. Mil does not change in this number expression, so dos miles is not the counting form.
What is the difference between millón and millones?
Un millón means one million; dos millones means two million. The plural loses the written accent because its stress fits the normal spelling rule.
Should I read a telephone number as one giant number?
Usually not. Say the digits or locally familiar groups, and ask ¿Puedes repetir? if you need to confirm a part. Grouping habits vary by country and speaker.
